Surrounded – Alone in Leadership

Surrounded and still alone?

Where are you most surrounded, yet least accompanied?
What part of leadership do you hold alone?
Where do others assume support because you appear steady?
What about school leadership leaves you alone with responsibility?
Phoenix Whispers
Rise Strong. Rise Renewed.

I was on holiday, moving slowly enough to actually notice my surroundings.
A wide field. Sheep. Lambs.
Togetherness. Safety. Familiar order.
And then I saw a deer.
Standing quietly among them.
At first I thought I had it wrong.
But I hadn’t.
The deer remained. Calm. Separate. Visible.
Close enough to blend in.
Different enough to be alone.
It didn’t look distressed.
But it wasn’t protected either.
That image stayed with me longer than I expected.
Because school leadership often feels like this.
You are surrounded all day.
By staff. By pupils. By decisions.
You are trusted. Relied upon. Needed.
And yet alone with certain thoughts, choices, and weight.
You stay steady.
You cope.
So the aloneness goes unnoticed.
HERE’S WHAT I’VE LEARNT
Leadership loneliness rarely announces itself.
It hides inside competence and constant presence.
CARRY THIS WITH YOU
Being surrounded does not mean being supported
Strength often increases what is held alone
Loneliness can exist without crisis
The Whisper
You can be surrounded and still carry things alone.
Where does this part of you find somewhere to rest?
School leaders are rarely isolated - and often unheld.
Emotions land with you.
Decisions settle with you.
Responsibility stays.
You absorb pressure so others can stay focused and safe.
This is not weakness.
It’s leadership.
But leadership was never meant to be carried without somewhere to rest.
When there is no place for leaders to be held, they don’t fail.
They stand surrounded - but alone.
I help empower overwhelmed school leaders to ignite clarity,
reclaim their time and renew their energy.
Empower. Ignite. Renew.
I’m here when you’re ready to explore your next step.
