Still Ahead of You - Why School Leaders Struggle to Feel Progress
School leaders often don’t notice when this begins.
You’re still showing up. Still making decisions. Still holding everything together.
But internally, something has shifted.
What used to feel manageable now feels like it’s constantly building.
And no matter how much you do, it still feels like most of it is ahead of you.
Not because nothing is getting done.
But because very little of it is allowed to feel done.
The pace never really drops
The days are full.
Meetings stack into each other.
Conversations pick up before the last one has fully landed.
Emails are answered, decisions are made, problems are handled.
From the outside, everything is working.
But internally, something else is happening.
There’s no clear sense of completion.
No real moment where something settles.
Even when something is finished, your attention has already moved on.
To the next thing.
And the next.
And the next.
So while progress is happening, it rarely feels like progress.
It starts to feel like…
It starts to feel like being on a treadmill.
Same pace. Same effort. Same distance.
But with one small difference.
There’s a setting that shows time elapsed - what you’ve already done.
And one that shows time remaining - everything still to come.
Nothing physical changes between the two.
But the experience changes completely.

And here’s the part that often goes unseen…
When your attention is constantly pulled towards what’s still ahead, something important begins to shift.
Decisions become quicker - not because they should be, but because they need to be cleared.
Thinking becomes narrower - focused on getting through, not stepping back.
Completion stops registering - because there’s no space for it to land.
And the pressure never actually reduces - because nothing is experienced as complete.
So it follows you.
At some point, it stops being about coping - and starts shaping the kind of leader you are able to be.
This is not a capacity problem. It’s a conditions problem.
When your environment never gives you the opportunity to pause,
to complete a thought,
to let something settle -
And without somewhere for this to happen, the cycle simply continues.
The shift
More effort doesn’t change this.
More thinking doesn’t change this either.
Because what’s missing isn’t effort - it’s space.
In coaching, something different happens…
You stay with a thought long enough for it to fully unfold.
Things that have been carried for weeks finally land.
Decisions that felt unfinished become clear.
Effort that went unnoticed becomes visible.
If you’ve recognised yourself in this, this isn’t something you fix by pushing harder. Coaching becomes the space you’ve been missing.
Here's What I've Learnt
You haven’t lost your ability to move forward. You’ve lost the conditions that allow progress to feel real.
Carry This With You
What am I measuring right now - what’s left, or what’s already been done?
What hasn’t had the space to properly land?
Clarity cannot compete with continuation.
The Whisper
It only feels like everything is still ahead of you.
What hasn’t had the chance to feel complete?
I help school leaders who feel like they’re slowly disappearing into the job -
find their way back.
If this resonates, I offer a complimentary 30 ‑ minute session where we focus on one thing that’s on your mind.
A simple space to step back, think clearly, and begin to feel like yourself again.
